70 years ago... (1997)
Around 70 years ago, give or take, there was a young man who defeated the worst evil the wizarding world had yet to see: He was Harry Potter; The Boy-Who-Lived and his battle with the Dark Lord Voldemort; He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, You-Know-Who became legendary. He gave the magical world the peace it so craved for, and had the family he'd always wanted. He got to watch his children grow up, he got to love them. He even got to see his grandchildren.
6 years gone...(2067)
There was a man named William Wellington and he was a man who was very interested in spell creation. Mr. Wellington was something of a genius, while at the same time he wasn't very smart; as with a good deal of overly smart people common sense can sometimes be left at the wayside. One day he was in the final stages of a very powerful, very delicate spell (What it was for, no one is quite sure even to this day). Unfortunately he forgot one small, but extremely important detail: Mr. Wellington forgot to set up wards. When Mr. Wellington cast his spell it apparently was faulty and caused a massive spacial magic explosion that sent a sort of 'ripple' out over the greater part of Europe; the result? Massive Full Scale Ward Failure.
All over Europe magical homes, and work places began to pop into existence. Muggles everywhere were scared out of their wits by the sight of entire buildings simply materializing where they hadn't been before. Only a few extremely powerful wards were retained (such as the ones protecting Hogsmeade and Hogwarts).
The Minister of Magic at the time, one Gerald Overmire, immediately went to the British Prime Minister in hopes of simply smoothing the matter over while the Aurors looked into what had caused things, and squads of Obliviators tried to clear the memories of the startled Muggles. Unfortunately even such quick work was much to late in the game: Muggles' had extremely fast news coverage after all, and within a few short hours the entire world knew.
Magic was real.
2 years past...(2071)
For around 5 years things seemed to be going pretty well. While tension was high both politically and between the normal people for the most part everyone seemed to be getting used to the idea that Mrs. Next-Door-The-Witch really was, in fact, a witch. Some people even seemed interested that there was another secret race dwelling right there with them the whole time: Some a little too interested, and rumors of kidnappings, underground experiments, and government conspiracies abounded. No ones really sure who started it, or why, but somewhere along the way it happened: Tension came to a head and the inevitable explosion rocked the world. It could have been in another country; or it could have been in Europe: No one really knows, and at this point no one cares. All there is to it, is most of the world's at war: Ripping itself apart as Magical fights Muggle.
The Ministry was destroyed when a man raving about God, Satan, and Demons took a bomb into the middle of the Atrium and set it off. Many people died in the initial explosion, and the following collapse; However thanks to it's magical nature the building held up long enough for the majority of the people to escape.
The next place to go was Durmstrang, and this time the Magical Community had a name for it's tormentors a group calling itself NecoVeneficus[*]. Some say its a vigilante group, some a specialist government force: No one knows, but the purpose is clear; NecoVeneficus is a group of Witch Hunter. The surviving Durmstrang Students were sent to Hogwarts for both safety, and to see out their education.
Beauxbatons fell only a week later, and her students joined the Durmstrang ones in the halls of Hogwarts.
Here and Now...(2073)
These days most people are almost constantly afraid for one reason or another, though life seems to be flowing along rather peachy. World status says their at war, but like most people they seem to forget about it when they don't see it beyond a few reports on the TV. Hogwarts and Hogsmeade have become a sort of refuge for displaced magical families, and continue to accept more and more students from all over Europe now that the other two premier magical academies are no longer around.
NecoVeneficus continues to be at large, raiding magical homes and carting the witches and wizards off to their deaths. On top of that a group of unknowns have begun to retaliate: They wear the disguise of the Magical Communities old plague; calling themselves Death Eaters though they were without the white bone-like masks, and no one cast the Dark Mark, a spell that most had forgotten willfully.
